The New York Concert Review stated that Marka Young, violinist, played “…with a
broad, majestic interpretation and a full-bodied sound.” when she played her recital
debut at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall. A versatile performer, Ms. Young performs as a
concert soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. She is an exciting,
communicative performer, with a beautiful tone and strong musical line.
Marka Young is currently the Assistant Concertmaster of the Hudson Valley
Philharmonic, Concertmaster of the Northern Dutchess Symphony Orchestra, violinist
with the Rebel Baroque Orchestra, violin/violist with Artek and violinist with The
American Classical Orchestra.
In 2014, Ms. Young performed the Barber Violin Concerto with the Northern Dutchess
Symphony Orchestra. 2014 also saw the release of Artek’s CD: Soli Deo Gloria, the
Canatas of Johann Rosenmüller. As a member of the Rebel Baroque Orchestra, Ms.
Young has played for NPR’s “Performance Today” and for a multi-year series of
acclaimed performances broadcast on WQXR. The Rebel Baroque Orchestra has
recorded numerous works with the Trinity Wall Street Choir, including Handel’s Messiah
and all of the Haydn Masses in an 8-CD box set, released September 2009.
Marka Young studied violin with Camilla Wicks, Joyce Robbins and Dorothy Delay. She
holds the DMA and MM of music from the State University of New York at Stony Brook
and the BA from Sarah Lawrence College. She currently teaches at Vassar College in
Poughkeepsie, NY and at the Mountain Laurel Waldorf School in New Paltz, NY. She
lives in New Paltz with her husband and son and is a passionate gardener.
